Awaydays

  1. Saffron Walden
The old houses of Saffron Walden plus Bridge End gardens. These are very attractive gardens quite close to the historic church, which has very good views from outside (all around the town) and inside (very nice stained glass; but less accessible on Sundays, of course). Historic houses are mostly in the same area and there is a walk for the more energetic to a point where you can get pictures of the outside of Audley End House. Ample choice for coffee venues and good lunch venue at The Temeraire, a Weatherspoon pub. Photo opportunities include architecture, formal gardens, historic streets, church, landscapes with Audley End House in it. John Young put this forward and May is an ideal time. Half day. May 13th , meet at Coles Lane car park at 9.30am.

  1. WW2 Re-enactment at Kentwell Hall, Suffolk

Entry price quoted on website: £10.95 (concession: £9.95) Photo opportunities: people pictures, portraits, landscapes, architecture with the beautiful Kentwell House, action in the re-enactment. The photographs will be used for a variety of purposes, including publicity in the Linton News, on their website and on their calendar. Contact: Roger Lapwood

Awaydays

  1. London Mela or Festival of History
These two present a tough choice, writes John Keeble . The London Mela is an enormous, very colourful, southern India arts festival in Gunnersbury Park , Ealing, west London. Entrance is free and the events range from Bollywood productions to modern and traditional dance performances... more information at:
    http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.htm?fx=event&event_id=98034

The Festival of History is a huge English Heritage show at Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire, on August 12 (and 11 th ) – many attractions, from reenacted Civil War battles to WW1 fighter planes. One of the English Heritage people told me: “There is so much on that, even with a programme, you can't get round to everything.” Entry is £17 for one day; concessionary one day is £13. More information at:
    http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.9427
    Photographic opportunities: people, action, colour.

  2. Banger racing
Banger racing from noon but the grounds open earlier for those great ‘getting ready' shots ... Dave Stone writes: "This is the best one, on the dirt track at Henham nr Stansted-Dunmow area. My team will be defending our team championship that we won last year having a really good battle with a team from London. There are about 15-20 teams of 6 cars per side and as the track is bumpy there are lots of rollovers." Fast shutter speeds, then? 2. Saffron Walden dog agility club
These dogs are fast, writes June Keeble. They are trained to go over jumps and obstacles, through tunnels and undertake other feats of agility and control. It will be good for action shots as well as informal studies and portraits of the interaction between people and their dogs. *Clare Griffiths, who runs Redgate Agility Club at Sewards End with her husband Tim, will welcome us to their Sunday morning training session and they expect ‘quite a lot of interest' from proud dog owners. Awaydays

  1. Seals on Lincolnshire coast
Ralph Atkinson writes: This means a 3 hour car journey each way. It is very exposed so good warm, wind & waterproof clothing, wellies & leggings or waders required. A reasonable level of fitness required as it is nearly a mile out across sand (20 mins) to the adult seals which I think made the better pictures. There is also a pupping area with probably several hundred seals very close to the car park but although they have the aaaahhh factor & are very close to a protective fence requiring a standard or short telephoto I preferred the adults. It is not a problem to do both but ideally a 300mm lens or more is required for the adults. I used a 70-300 mm with film the first year being around 480mm on digital last year. A flask & sandwiches as only a burger van in the car park. Mid to late November is the best time coinciding with low tide around early afternoon. Even if you do not get any good pictures you will feel very privileged to have to have spent time in their company & environment. You will remember it for the rest of your life no matter how cold & miserable it gets. The first year was actually very mild & warm but you have to be prepared for the worst as per the second year. I reckon if we meet at the car park at 05:00am & away no later than 05:15am we should be there by 08:15am we stand a chance of getting in the small official car park that has solid ground. This would enable us to have all morning & the early afternoon on a falling tide & low water, very safely & I would suspect much longer if we wanted. It is a long day & with a 3 hour drive home partly in darkness I would think being on the road by 14:00 would not be a bad idea but can be flexible on the day. Whole Day: November 11 th , meet at Coles Lane car park at 5am. ***Email Ralph if you want to go ***

  2. Rugby match
I like  idea of Action shots, a sports meeting would be a good idea but we need to think of things where we could get close to the action, not up in the stands a long way away, writes Jan Shambrook .  I'm not a great football fan but perhaps a local rugby match for the action might be a change, if again we can get near to the action. Half Day SATURDAY - date to be confirmed
